A-Type

History

A-Type grew out of the long-established Halifax printing business W. Turner & Son Limited, which was bought by my father in 1963. After his retirement printing took a back seat to my favoured aspect of the printing trade, typesetting, and eventually the business reduced in size and relocated at my home/office under the new name.

Unfortunately, it then soon became apparent that new technology enabled anyone to be a typesetter, and most of my customers decided to do it themselves. This prompted a major reassessment of my career and realisation that I was not really suited to self-employment!

I took a University course and ended up in full-time employment at the University of Huddersfield -- see my staff page there. This has also led to work on the Alice project, where I have another home page.

Contact with the world wide web in this position has now opened up the possibility of providing this modern-day typesetting on my own account, and in the longer term A-Type may still provide interest (and funding for special projects). As is shown more by the above example than here, I am a reasonably competent 'web editor'; I can also program a mean Applet ...

Thanks for your interest!
