The Elland & Ryburn Circuit
Southgate
The first Methodist building on this site was a school chapel built in 1891. The present Church building was opened for public worship in June 1915 and was originally called St. Pauls. In 1962 Temperance Street, a nearby Methodist Church, joined with St Pauls. In 1972 Elland Wesley and Middle Dean Street Church in West Vale combined with St Pauls. After two years of all three Churches worshipping at Elland Wesley, in November 1974 we moved back to the St Pauls site, which in the intervening period had been extensively refurbished, and became Southgate Methodist Church.
As a Church we are looking towards the future and we are currently engaged in fund raising activities to enable us to finance redevelopment of our Sunday School building - see below
There is disabled access to the Church and to parts of the
Lower Sunday School building. There is also a fully equipped disabled
toilet facility.
Southgate - The community and the future
The premises at Southgate are already extensively used by and for the local community. Sponsored by the Church, Boys' and Girls' Brigades and Parents and Tots groups meet weekly; regular Shoppers' lunches are held; there is a Drama Group; Table Tennis teams play in local leagues; and there is a weekly Coffee Morning. Other organisations using the premises regularly are Slimmers' World, Ladies Probus Groups, Goat Club, Blood Donors, and a Yoga group, Surestart, Macmillan Nurses and the local Town Twinning Group. Our Member of Parliament holds a regular surgery and the building is used as a Polling Station.
The Church has an ongoing programme of works to upgrade our
large 2 storey ancillary buildings, and already a number of smaller
rooms and the toilets have been refurbished. There is a fully equipped
disabled toilet and baby changing facilities. The upgrading of our
large well equipped kitchen has also just been completed. With a view
to encouraging even more community use, we are currently working on a
scheme which will see the upgrading of 2 large halls, one of which
already has a stage equipped for dramatic productions. The coffee bar
will also be altered; disabled access will be provided throughout, and
a spacious and welcoming new entrance foyer will be created.
We believe that the scheme will provide an attractive suite of rooms,
flexible in use, which will be of great benefit to the people and
organisations of Elland.
We look forward as a Church to continuing to serve the town of Elland in to the 21st Century.
